My 94 Ram 2500 CTD… 5x.014″ injectors, Holset HE451VeTi VGT turbo, and some pump tweeks :D Dang sand………. Ended up leaving about .3 miles of black mark :P

it opens at about 20-22psi. it’s almost seamless though so it’s hard to tell. i would *like* to start off with the veins smaller than they are but it’s too restrictive before 20psi…that’s why i’d like to get a 15psi wastegate actuator. drive pressure doesn’t control it, just the boost pressure running to the wastegate actuator. the actuator is strong enough to move the arm where it wants with little resistance.

What pressure does it open at now? The stocker off of a 12 valve seems to open somewhere around 12psi. Even that seems to just start to choke it up right before it opens. I think a 20 or 23psi opening pressure actuator would work great for using drive pressure…

I know what you mean by the how quiet it is below 2k… Almost sounds as quiet as with a stock muffler! But boy does it ever sound good when the housing opens. Thinking about going back with dual 5″ stacks :D

i tried it with the veins pretty well closed but had a hard time getting from 20psi (which is all the motor would push with the veins closed up a lot) to the 23psi or so the factory gate opens up the veins. SOoo a 15psi would allow for quicker spoolup and then moving to the high end flow.

yep, no bark. no driving issues. spools like the stocker and flows great. WOT i’m making 32,33 psi on TNT #5. i can close the veins up on the top end if i want for more boost. really quiet below 2k rpms and sounds a lot like a vgt duramax on the top end with the whooooshing sound. would like to get a 15psi or so wasteaget actuator so i can close the veins for even quicker spool up.

Check out the video “death of the slicks” under my account. It is this truck, but listen close at the end you will hear it bark when he hits OD and the tires finally catch…

I see that member since ’06 with a whopping 11 posts :P That’s cool that the 351 doesn’t bark for you. I see you like the crazy unique sound of these turbos too…

yeah. i really never go on compd, i’m always on CF or on our regional NETDP just built the actuator set up a couple hours ago, still need to be prettied up. man it would be be badass to drop an ve551 below this. the 351ve has no turbo bark and i’ve tuned the transition from “closed” to “open” real good.

As cool as it sounds, I would rather not risk snapping the compressor shaft by purpousfully barking my turbo. That and I doubt my camera would pick it up right.

lets see a video of that turbo bark.

You wouldn’t happen to be Sooter on CompD would you? If so I see you’ve been posting on the HE351VE on a 12 valve thread…

ah ok. well, after many hours of tinker with different positions i figured out an adapter that would work..and built it. so tomorrow it goes in. hopefull i’ll have enough time to get the actuator setup built and in. i’ll get videos after things are in and tuned. sooter on CF.

Yes, if you are gentle about letting off then it won’t bark. Though you really have to let off slow if you are playing off road.

Drive pressures aren’t bad. They say they even out to a 1:1 ratio by 15psi of boost and stay there. Drive pressure won’t hold it open at all though, that’s the point of those holes drilled between the vanes on the collar.

well, i finally got around to ordering some piping i need for the weird 2nd gen exh manifold t3 to the he351ve up high…hopefully wont create too much extra drive pressure. is it easy to control the bark if you let off the throttle easy? i read that the turbo vanes *may* want to stay open/out from simple drive pressure…so i’m hoping that the drive pressure will keep the vanes out until a spring will pull them back in near idle.

i still haven’t finished my project due to work (self employed) but i’m going to have to buy/use short radius piping to go from the 2nd gen manifold in the down pisition to the turbo which will be up high like in a twin turbo set up. the 3rd gens don’t have as much room to the firewall and the shock tower is closer to the engine. becoming a pita now..

Oh hey I forgot to mention Industrial Injection has been playing around with these turbos and has put a 64mm wheel in a 351 and made nearly 700 fuel only *evil grin*

Yeah, the 451 does bark like a madman when you’re really horsing around. Especially if you have the tires spinning and you let off too quick. I’m seriously considering a BOV for this thing as a single!

yeah, i’ll probably wind up on that path or an s400. compounds with 2 manually-controlled VGT’s would probably have to have a big blow off valve or couple smaller tial blow off valves to keep from barking too much…..i’d assume?? wouldn’t know til i tried..

I’d like to try a 551 as a primary, but I think for my budget I’ll just end up with a trusty ol’ HT3B with like a 26cm gated housing.

i was going to have my 351 vgt in today but gotta wait til tomorrow to get some tubing for the transition from 2nd gen manifold to the turbo (for my 04). been a PITA so far but hopefully worth it. would like to try a 351 vgt and 551 vgt for twins in the future *evil grin*

Yeah there’s one on Competition Diesel in the dodge competition and performance forum under “Anybody else get a good look at the new comp wheels on the Holset turbos???” My screen name on there is BlackSkyRacing

nice man, do you have any write-ups on the forums or anything? i’d like to some some close ups of the turbo/vgt set up!

Temps are about 550 cruising at 65 empty and about 800 with a 10,000 pound load on the flats at 65. It has gotten warmer than 1600 on a flat out top end run in OD. But, i do need to bump my timing yet. Max boost thus far is 45psi (there’s more fuel to tune in when i’m ready). And i’m using a simple old school wastegate actuator to control the VGT.

    how are egts?
how do you controll the VGT?
