Title: hx40 v-band flange
Post by: GST95 on May 26, 2009, 12:07:37 PM
Anybody know where i can get a flange and clamp to mate up to the v-band outlet on a hx40?  I found a flange for my wh1c at a freightliner dealer for like $20, but i checked a cummins dealer for one for my hx40 and they wanted $70 just for a flange :o so i didnt even ask about a clamp.  It looks to me to be a 3.25 v-band since its a little bigger than the 3" one i have.  It might be 3.5, but i dont think it is.

That's actually about right for the O.E. Cummins flange, which is formed stainless.  I think I can get it to you for around $58.00 or so.

There are some vendors online who sell machined versions, but they're not much less expensive.  In this case, the clamp is actually less expensive than the flange.

I was hoping somebody knew where i could find an aftermarket one that might be a little cheaper or knew of other turbos that had the same outlet that i might be able to cross reference or use part of a used downpipe or something.  Thats why i didnt post it in the wanted section originally.

Is it the same size outlet as one of the he series turbos?  I know they are bigger than the wh1c, but i dont know their actual sizes.

How much for the clamp?

This flange is common on 8.3l Cummins engines, but not a whole bunch else, until you get into the later ISL and ISM engines, which use HX40 units.

The clamp is 'around' $30.00; message me with your e-mail contact information, and I'll prepare a real quote for you.

I do know that Walker Exhaust can supply both clamp and flange, but I've found it to be similarly priced, and the flange is mild steel, which isn't really a good value.

I got a lead on a place that makes formed flanges instead of machined ones that i think i will be able to make work.  They deal mainly in replacement and custom exhaust for semis.  They have one for a 4.00 OD flange and one for a 4.07 OD flange and wanted me to check for sure before i ordered one.  I wont be able to measure it until the weekend though.

If this doesnt work out ill let you know.  My exhaust is the only thing im having trouble locating parts for and im tired of searching.  Thanks for the help.

So

can anyone give me some definite info on this?

i bought a 3" vband flange and clamp but it doesnt fit, it's much too small

the OD of the holset seems to be 4" but the ridges arent very wide so i'm not sure if any clamp will work?

Columbia River Mandrell Bending has machined flanges and clamps all sold as sets or individual pieces. I just got a 4" stainless clamp for mx hx50 for $20. The flanges are around $15 I think. They also list outside dia's so it makes matching one easy.
 It's probably a 3.5" because I work on a lot of n/a 8.3l cummins and they have a 3.5" exhaust adapter
