Holset VGT turbo on a 6.5 Diesel

Posted on 18. Apr, 2009 by admin in Videos

This is my friend’s custom project. He managed to squeeze a Holset HE351VE off a 6.7 Cummins onto his 6.5 suburban. Here’s the first start and a few revs.

@baird396 He’s running a max of 18 psi right now, and that’s with the Pedal to the Metal. With the VGT wired open he won’t hit those high boost numbers.

@04Forester Right now the VGT is wired wide open. He’s working on a setup to control the VGT. I”M waiting to see exactly what he does, because I’m debating going the VGT route at some point as well.

@iamdave0887 Did he have to make the controller for the VGT turbo or is a person able to buy on these days??

6.5 cheaper to build up than a cummins if u know what your doing marine injectors #9 resistor comp burn progesive injection of propane/water n a few other items all the pwer u ever need hi hp #,s are great in loads of fun but useless in the real world

@deerefanatic But, as stock trucks go, during the 90′s, the 6.5 was the quickest on it’s feet…..

@iamdave0887 Problem here is that I happen to also own a 6.5… It’ll never hold much for ponies…. You’ll crack the block open (I’ve seen it done) or shatter the crank. Yes, I know tougher blocks, cranks and rods are available…. But, for the money you spent, a 5.9 Cummins would be way farther ahead for horsepower… Heck, for no money what so ever I’m into the 280 hp range with my 95 Dodge….

But, I do think the VGT would be nice for some more low-end torque as the 6.5 is surely lacking.

Pretty cool setup and looks professional. Doesn’t the CDR valve need to be hooked back up though?

i wish it was my setup. I was at his house the other day. Truck looks better that it did in the video. Water to air intercooler installed now and a reflashed ECM. He says the truck really moves now. I drove it when it was stock save for a 4″ exhaust. I’d love to drive it now and see the difference.

    aww cute another hater.

One – How very immature of you.

    Two – POS huh?

how’s about the 6.9 IDI that hit 1,200HP and 2,000 ft lbs of torque running 145 psi boost with compound turbos back in the 90s before everyone was doing it? Is that a POS too?

    Moron…

The VGT was wide open in this video, therefore very little whistle. The loud whistle comes from the VGT being closed tighter and therefore the turbine/compressor spins faster.

no matter wat u do to it its still an indirect injection pos!

Holset on a Suburban +5 Pipe though the hood -5. Otherwise, very cool.

What do you mean how long did it last? It’s still running with this turbo on it. The engine’s been very well cared for. It’s a 97 506 block.
